چکیده

1. The effect of treatment with a thiazide-like diuretic alone or combined with a beta-adrenoceptor blocker on serum lipoproteins was investigated in 35 patients with essential hypertension. 2. In group I (18 patients), serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was increased (P less than 0.001) during monotherapy with chlorthalidone (100 mg/day) but not during combined chlorthalidone--beta-blocker therapy. 3. This tendency was similar in subgroups studied with an inverse sequence of drug administration. In subgroup IA (11 men), a 22% increase (P less than 0.01) in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol after 6 weeks of chlorthalidone was reversed after use of a beta-blocker as well as chlorthalidone; in subgroup IB (five men, two post-menopausal women), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was increased by 41% (P less than 0.05) above placebo values 6 weeks after withdrawal of the beta-blocker from combination therapy. 4. In group II (18 men), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was increased by 13% (P less than 0.025) after 4 weeks of monotherapy with clopamide (5 mg/day) but restored to control levels 4 weeks after addition of pindolol (10 mg/day). 5. No significant changes occurred during any treatment phase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. 6. Certain beta-receptor blocking agents may prevent or reverse diuretic-induced increases in serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Effects of antihypertensive therapy on serum lipoproteins.

Several drugs used for standard antihypertensive therapy may also interact with the lipoprotein metabolism. The following has been observed after 1 to 12 months of treatment. Various thiazide-type diuretics may significantly increase the potentially atherogenic serum low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and/or very-LDL-C-fractions, while the antiatherogenic high-density-lipoprotein chole...

Attenuating Effect of Curcumin on Diet-induced Hypercholesterolemia in Mice

Background and Aims: Atherosclerosis is currently a chronic disease in which cholesterols accumulate in large arteries. Many genes such as liver X receptor α (LXRα) are involved in the cholesterol homeostasis. Curcumin, the main active polyphenol component derived from Curcuma longa, contribute to anti-inflammation and antioxidant in the treatment of atherosclerosis. Thus, this stud...

Selective thyroid receptor modulation by GC-1 reduces serum lipids and stimulates steps of reverse cholesterol transport in euthyroid mice.

Thyroid hormones [predominantly 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3)] regulate cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism, but cardiac effects restrict their use as hypolipidemic drugs. T3 binds to thyroid hormone receptors (TRs) alpha and beta. TRbeta is the predominant isoform in liver, whereas T3 effects on heart rate are mediated mostly by TRalpha. Drugs that target TRbeta or exhibit tissue-selectiv...

Polyphenols isolated from virgin coconut oil attenuate cadmium-induced dyslipidemia and oxidative stress due to their antioxidant properties and potential benefits on cardiovascular risk ratios in rats

Objective: Literature has confirmed the pathogenic role of cadmium (Cd) and its exposure in the induction of dyslipidemia implicated in the development and increasing incidence of cardiovascular diseases. The current study explored whether polyphenolics isolated from virgin coconut oil (VCO) prevent Cd-induced dyslipidemia and investigate the underlying mechanism of action, in rats. Materials a...

Effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum probiotics on the serum biochemical parameters, and the vitamin D and leptin receptor genes on mice colon cancer

Objective(s): The preclinical reports have shown that specific probiotics like Bifidobacterium bifidum (B. bifidum) and Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) can be applied as the biotherapeutic agents in the inhibition or therapy of colorectal cancer via the modification of gut bacteria. In the previous studies, we have assessed the impact of L. acidophilus and B...
